Horse Slaughter Humane Society of the United States
Question: Discuss about the Horse Slaughter for Humane Society of the United States? Answer: The Horse slaughter is an activity of slaughtering horses for producing meat for the purpose of human consumption. In most of the countries, after slaughtering, the horses are processed in the industrial abattoirs like cattle. There are a number of procedures by which horses are slaughtered, but their slaughtering should be in humane procedures. In the United States, the government has been provided legislations about slaughtering. Horsemeat is good for human because it is leaner, but it should be addressed that, is these horses are provided medication or not. Therefore, it can be predicted that rendering American horsemeat is toxic. The pro-slaughter group attempt to make people believe that they carry out horse slaughter with the humane ending, but it is horrible to explain through which phases the horses goes through. There are three different ways by which horses are slaughtered. In one process, horses are loaded into three boxes, and a bolt is aimed at the horses head. Sometimes , the aim is missed, and it makes the horse panic, and again they are aimed until it becomes unconscious. In other ways, they are shot with a .22 Rifle at their head. Sometimes the horse remains conscious, as they have a thick skull. In Mexico, knifes make the horse paralyzed, and they remain alive when they are strung through one leg for processing. However, none of these three options are humane. Rather there is evidence that illegal migrants and criminals work in slaughterhouses. Therefore, only old, sick or injured horses should go to slaughtering (YouTube 2016). Taylor and Sieverkropp (2013) discussed the impact of United States horse slaughter plant closing on the Western Regional Horse market. In this study, the price collision from the U.S. horse slaughter plant closure in 2007 upon the live horses at Montana auction. The study estimated by the hedonic model with the use of a quantile waning exposed that price decrease of 12 to 16% of the horses, which are priced below or at $1500 to the end of U.S. horse slaughter. While looking the facts of horse slaughtering deeply, the truth is that meat is not only unnecessary and inhumane, but it is also harmful for the human consumption. The horse slaughter in U.S. or other plants cannot be in the humane process due to the industrial nature unique biology of horses. In this context, the article highlighted that the federal government of U.S. do not have a system for tracking the lifetime medical histories of horses and thus the reputation of U.S. meat industry is at risk (Humanesociety.org 2015).
